what a great time last night! Chris and Riley it was nice meeting you guys, and Max your stuff looked great! Chris those Saxons are insanely beautiful. i hope that there will be an HC presence at GE for a long time to come...Riley i like your idea of a regular night.
Even though my Greeks got wiped, i learned a few things from Chuckus to bring to bear the next time out. I think that the Spartan phalanxs will be a welcome addition.

I really like Riley's idea of a regular HC game night as well. It sounded like Wed. night seemed to work for most of us there. I know having a regular night will keep me motivated to paint up my armies. I can't wait to see everyone out there with their own painted armies.

Speaking of which, I really liked your Greeks Derek. I can't wait to see the whole army out there, especially the Spartans. I think you should consider using the WF hoplites as your Spartans, as they are bigger, than the Warlord figures, they would look more impressive on the table as true Spartans should.

Max, your Romans looked really nice, and you sure do paint quick. You will have your whole Roman army painted in no time at this rate.

Oh, and Riley, you need to get that chariot unit painted. They were serious badasses last night. They broke my whole division single-handed and only took two casualties! They earned their paint.

Hi Daloonie,
I am also running Greeks
I have 5 phalanxs 3 City State, 2 Spartan built, with more to follow. I ended up buying 4 boxes of guys
so i eventually see 10 phalanxs...5 City State and 5 Spartan, as well as various skirmishers and the like. I would mount those extra 8 guys 4 to a 40mm and buy another box..then you have 5 phalanxs
also, i used a 50mm round for my commander , just so i could spot him on the field.
cant wait to see your division.

Your general can be on whatever size base you want. He's just a marker, after all. And you can put as many other figures on the base as you want.

I've mounted my General and other commander on 25mm squares, and park my standard bearer with the aquilla next to him for my Roman (beginnings of a) legion. Chuckus has a dog on the 25x50 base of his Roman general. While Riley's Briton General is on a round (I think 25mm) base with a standard bearer. The General (and all commanders) use the center of their heads as their measuring points, and so the only thing I would suggest is to make sure he's as close to the center as possible. And then just have fun making the bases, as long as you and your fellow gamers can easily spot him (as Junior said) on the battle field.

As for the mounting of Greeks, just remember that they need to be 3-4 ranks because of their Phalanx rules (I think it's 3 for Long Spears, and 4 for Pikes), but no one will cry foul if you begin with a single rank of 40mm squares to begin with. You could always start with a rank of four per 40mm, and then add in a back row on a 20x80 base later on (or 20x40 or 20 squares). Maybe make movement trays that have room for the back row(s), as a way of making space, and also laying out the full sized unit foot print. My Romans currently have one figure per 40mm base while I'm painting them up in order to get them fielded as quickly as possible, so it's the right size for the unit, and I can start playing as soon as I get four figures built and mounted versus sixteen.
