This is the section of the Forums where we discuss Flames of War, the excellent World War II 15mm miniatures game. Flames is a squad/single vehicle scale game (same scale as Squad Leader) set in World War II Europe and Africa. The game divides the war into three basic time periods, and each has its own flavor:
EARLY WAR (1939-1941): We have just started playing this period and it's a lot of fun. Tons of shooting and not much damage. It's funny to think of Panzer II's as being one of the best tanks of the period, and a Panzer III is an Uber-Tank. A lot of flavor in this period.
MID WAR (1942-1943): This is a great period to game because the different characteristics of the armies is so diverse. From freshly trained Americans to conscript Russians to veteran Germans to the unpredictable Italians, this period covers the campaigns in Sicily/Italy, Stalingrad, Kursk and the turning of the tide on the Russian Front. Good balance between the power of tanks and infantry.
LATE WAR (1944-1945): Tanks are king in this period, but the infantry are carrying a lot of lethal tank-killing weapons to compensate. Normandy, Market Garden, and the Russian Hordes rolling into Germany are covered in this period. Very fun and very lethal.
We play generally on Monday evenings at 6 pm, and we play in all three periods. I highly recommend this game and am happy to teach you how to play. You don't need an army to get started (though you will eventually if you decide you want to keep playing). Come on down and join the fun as we refight the great battles of World War II.
