Days of Wonder Prepares Memoir ’44 for the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings

Days of Wonder introduced Richard Borg‘s Memoir ’44 on June 7, 2004 to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the Normandy landings by Allied forces in World War II. (June 6, the actual landing date, fell on Sunday, and delivery personnel are not as committed to carrying out a mission as are those in the armed services.)

Two or three expansions or supplements for Memoir ’44 have been released each year since then, and for the tenth anniversary of the game’s debut — and the seventieth anniversary of the Normandy landings — Borg and Days of Wonder are headed back to the beach with Memoir ’44: D-Day Landings, a set of six battle maps encased in a cloth-bound “Commemorative Briefing Folder” that allow players to recreate some or all of the battles that took place on that beach in 1944.

Here’s an overview of what’s included in Memoir ’44: D-Day Landings and what you’ll need in order to use this expansion:

[quote_simple]The battle maps in D-Day Landings introduce the “Extended Breakthrough” format, with the maps being 23 hexes deep and allowing players to undertake battles on a scale and scope never before possible in Memoir ’44. The six maps consist of settings for American Airborne, Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Gold Beach, Juno Beach, and Sword Beach. Each battle can be played individually or assembled with its neighboring scenarios for double- and triple-map battles. With enough players (and enough components), you can link all six battle maps to form a giant board that recreates the entire Normandy coast![/quote_simple]

Memoir ’44: D-Day Landings requires at least one copy of Memoir ’44 as well as the Terrain Pack, Equipment Pack, and Winter Wars expansions. The Mediterranean Theater expansion is recommended, though not required. To play a double-, triple- or sextuple-map battle, more copies of the base game or expansions are required.

In a press release announcing the expansion, Richard Borg says, “We’ve had great fun both creating and playing these maps. Watching a dozen or more players battling over all six maps at once is an epic gaming experience. Not only do these D-Day Landings maps honor the 70-year anniversary of WWII’s most iconic battle, I’m also proud they mark the tenth anniversary of the Memoir ’44 game system.”

Sword Beach, one of the six battle maps

In addition to the six battle maps, Memoir ’44: D-Day Landings includes a punch board of tokens required for the scenarios and rules in English and French for the different game modes. This expansion retails for $35/€35 and is due out in June 2014 in North America and Europe.

Want a way to play that offers a level playing field and lets you check out new cards at the same time? Then a limited format like booster draft may be for you. Unlike constructed formats, where you arrive with a carefully constructed deck ready to play, limited formats allow you to build a deck from new cards as part of the game.

At the start of booster draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks a single card. (Don’t show the other players what you pick!) Then everyone passes the rest of their pack to player on their left, each player then picks a card from the pack they just received before passing again. This process continues until all the cards in those packs have been drafted. Then each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you do the same with the third pack, passing to the left again.
