About Game Empire

How Game Empire Began

Beginning as a humble vendor at the San Diego Swap Meet in the early 1990’s, the founders of Game Empire developed a loyal following for their extensive knowledge of game rules and merchandise. Loyal customers were even treated to weekend tournaments and teaching sessions which packed a local garage and no doubt made a small fortune for the nearby pizza delivery guy!

Our Mission

Dedicated to the belief that gaming is a serious hobby is best served by a professional business, we mapped out our first retail store which opened in 1994. With an attached 2000 sq ft. gameroom for tournaments and events, our original Mission Valley location offered players a chance to meet friends in an environment with knowledgeable staff and excellent playing facilities for events. Our goals were two-fold: bring together an amazing product selection that included specialty chess, backgammon, mahjong, jigsaw puzzles, independent board games, casino supplies, and the top selection of hobby products in town; and then not only sell the products but offer to teach people how to play! Customers can choose to join our ongoing leagues and tournaments, or simply indulge in our wall to wall selection of products from party to strategy to family games all in one place.

Our biggest success has been catering to the serious hobby customer’s interest in a variety of strategy wargames, for which we provide custom built model terrain pieces and miniature painting tips. As a part of our extensive tournament series, we offer “Rogue Trader” tournaments for Games Workshop fans, and support a variety of league play formats for miniatures games including Warhammer Fantasy and 40,000, Warmachine/Hordes, and Flames of War. In addition, our trading card game community is vibrant and features a healthy weekly tournament schedule, and we have sponsored players who attended Magic: the Gathering World Championships.

  • Magic the Gathering - Draft Format

    October 23, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Game Empire, 1795 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91106, USA

    Magic Amonkhet series.

    $15.00 Entry

Want a way to play that offers a level playing field and lets you check out new cards at the same time? Then a limited format like booster draft may be for you. Unlike constructed formats, where you arrive with a carefully constructed deck ready to play, limited formats allow you to build a deck from new cards as part of the game.

At the start of booster draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks a single card. (Don’t show the other players what you pick!) Then everyone passes the rest of their pack to player on their left, each player then picks a card from the pack they just received before passing again. This process continues until all the cards in those packs have been drafted. Then each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you do the same with the third pack, passing to the left again.
